My name is Raymond. I am local Papuan from Dani tribe. I was born and grew up in Baliem Valley, Wamena. I started dedicate my life in tourism when I was 12 years old as a porter in some guided tours, and I become a tour guide in 2009 and still well dedicate my life in tourism until now and tourism has become a nice plate of nice meals that I have been enjoying these years and I am so grateful to be a tour guide.
I used to work as a local tour guide for some big Travel Companies as a freelance tour guide but with experiences I gainded with my dedication, i decided to stand on my own feeds and I started run my own business and offer my own services with different kind of tour activities; Trekking, Cultural Tours, Festivals, Wildlife Watching, Filming Projects, Ethnical Photography and many more for an authentic and unforgettable experience.

Trekking Adventures
Trekking in the Baliem Valley usually takes multi-day, village-to-village hiking along traditional footpaths established and used by local people in the Baliem Valley. Trekking in Baliem Valley can be done 6 hours moreless in a day trek. There will be more stops for water break, lunch but also spend some times when you meet local people in the villages, gardens or on the way to share and take some photos with them.
The general area is sparsely populated, with small villages distributed hours apart, with little to no human development in between. The terrain is steep and mountainous, with most days involving climbs, descents, and river crossings traditional suspension bridges built.
The expected accommodation during the trek is pretty basic and traditional. Most of the time, you'll stay in local village huts—think simple wooden structures with floor mats or basic bedding. Sometimes there might be a shared hut for the group, and other times it’s just a small setup in a village. Expect open-air spaces, minimal amenities, and a real immersion in local life.
In a guided trek, usually food supplies and water are carried from Wamena with porters and a cook. For more information about things to bring, you can see it at each tour itinerary offered.
So, during a trek in the Baliem Valley, you can expect to see and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes, traditional Dani villages, where you’ll see grass-thatched huts, gardens, and daily life like pig herding and handicrafts. You’ll cross suspension bridges over the Baliem River, hike through rainforest, and see terraced fields on the hillsides.
Cultural Activities
Baliem valley has become a home for Dani, Lani & Yali tribes but also there are some sub tribes live here together such; Walak, nduga and some other sub-tribes which makes Baliem Valley is famous for culture richness and unique.
Most tribes are devided & separated in different locations in the highland. Some tribes can be reached by a car but some takes days of walk or take a small aircraft to the interior regions. The reachable tribes by raod or walk are Dani, Lani & Yali tribes. Usually, It takes 2 – 5 days more walk. It’s really immersive and it would be your unforgetable memory to experience both trek to the tribe villages but see and learn their cultures.
To experience the culture of indigenous tribe, you can visit some touristic spot such; Mummy & Pig Feast Ceremoney in Jiwika, Obia or Sumpaima village. But if you want to spend the nights & days with local then you can do a day trek or more days to the local villages to spend one or more night and focusing to learn, see and experience the daily life of local people.

Not only that, Baliem Valley Cultural festival also can be your option to attend and experience the cultures of highland indigenous tribes. It is usually held on every August and it has become a yearly cultural show. For this year of 2026, it will be held from August 6-8 in Usilimo District.
